Our experience with local TV in the UK
ITN is heavily involved in the development of the local and regional television industry in the UK. In addition to its national and international news services, ITN produces ITV's London Tonight (the ITV regional news service for London) and works closely with the ITV Regions in the development of the national ITV News bulletins.
ITN Consulting has skills and experience across local television and offers a wide range of support and consultancy services to those involved in developing, operating or seeking to bid for a licence to operate local TV or news services.
We have been active across the local TV landscape for the past three years, first under the Independently Funded News Consortia (IFNC) proposals developed by the Labour Government and most recently under the Local Television plans being developed by Culture Secretary Jeremy Hunt and the DCMS. We have been involved with all aspects of the policy debate ranging from the Digital Britain proposals, the Roger Parry consultation paper and Nicholas Shott review.
Our work has spanned:
- Developing a business plan and model for a local TV service
- Assessing the economic viability of local TV licences
- Building a consortium of partners to bid for a local news licence
- Developing and writing licence bids and managing bid teams
- Drafting regulatory submissions around the local TV and local news areas
- Developing operational and technology plans for local TV studios and newsgathering
- Designing a local news service
- Developing training plans and providing training support in all aspects of TV news production
We have worked with local newspaper groups, universities, national broadcasters, local radio providers and a wide range of independents already involved in, or seeking to become involved in, the local TV and news sector.
Drawing on this experience and accessing ITN’s wider expertise in news provision and the underlying systems required (e.g. compliance, news gathering), we are ideally placed to support those seeking to bid for local TV licences and subsequently launch local TV services.
